Achieve More With Less
From the desk of Julie Meaden
The 80/20 Principle.
There is a rule of thumb known as the 80/20 principle which is broadly in action across economy, science, social structure and the relationships of things to each other.
1. Relationships: 20% of people you know provide you with 80% of nurturing, support and satisfaction.(friends, family, colleagues).
2. Productivity: 20% of your activities account for 80% of your success.
3. Commerce: 20% of customers account for 80% of profit.
4. Agriculture: 80% of garden peas are produced by 20% of peapods.
Smart business uses the 80/20 principle as a guiding force to identify valuable elements in their business models.
Individuals can also use the 80/20 principle to transform their life outcomes.
This revolution may be performed by identifying the aspects of your life which are valuable to you ( those that fill you with contentment or joy). Job/career choice, relationships, hobbies, sports, spirituality etc.
Author and researcher R.J. Koch has commented that “the 80/20 principle shows up in all our relationships.
Intriguingly, that 80% of the value of relationships comes from 20% of our relationships.”
Therefore, it pays more to cultivate & build the most important relationships in our lives.
In 'Living the 80/20 Way', Koch focuses on how to succeed personally & professionally, making a good life as well as a living – while doing less.
We can achieve more as we relax, enjoy life more and concentrate on the few things that matter uniquely to us.
In 'Superconnect' co-authored with G. Lockwood, they say that success is less about who you are and more about how you connect.
He gets even more specific with numbers: roughly 8 personal relationships and 7 professional ones are those which shape your life!
The 80/20 principle may be applied by everybody, everyday with the
Seven Habits of Happiness Daily Routine
1. Exercise
2. Mental stimulation
3. Spiritual/artistic stimulation/meditation
4. Do a good turn
5. Take a pleasure break with a friend
6. Give yourself a treat
7. Congratulate yourself
If the 80/20 principle applies to you, don’t try to do more, simply do more of the right things.
It makes sense to increase the things that make you happy and reduce the things that make you sad.
